Detours
Detours was a project that shifts what could be a frustrating moment around the major Highway 61 construction project in downtown Grand Marais. It was an opportunity to explore Cook County residents' stories about moments of metaphorical roundabouts, slow downs and detours that have shaped who they are or brought unexpected gifts to their lives. On top of the construction, after a complicated year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this project aimed to bring joy and connection to the Grand Marais community and visitors.
The project culminated in turning community stories into bright road signs spread across the town for residents and visitors to find. It became about play, hope and creativity in a moment of complexity.
This is a collaborative project between the city of Grand Marais, Cook County, and the Cook County Creative Economy Collaborative (which is the arts advisory to the city). St. Paul based artist Amanda Lovelee will work as the lead artist for this project, and gather cross-generational stories from Cook County residents of all ages.
